Hi! I’m Jake.
Jumped into Amateur Radio in December 2021, upgraded to General in January 2022, and Amateur Extra April 2023. Got my started in radio with my GMRS license for off-roading while in the Mojave Desert. Since I was already interested in HAM for years it was a gateway drug to all things Amateur. POTA/SOTA is my favorite HAM activity so far as I love the outdoors.
I’m a proud member of the Flag and Torch Society, a Military and Veteran amateur radio club and outreach group. The group is comprised of veterans across the nation and is very active on discord.
My experience includes over 7 years working on military radios in the field as a Cavalry Scout and Electromagnetic Warfare Sergeant in the US Army. I’m a guest instructor for an Advanced Radio and Antenna Theory course and Volunteer Examiner for Soldiers attempting to earn their license.
In my spare time I have more projects than I count, I run an APRS digipeater on a Yaesu FTM-1500 and Raspberry Pi 3b. My Home Station is a Yaesu FT-991a into a RF-1944 terminated dipole. I use a FT-891, FT-857d, and Xeigu X6100 for portable/field operations. I’ve recently acquired a couple of military surplus crank up/winch towers on which I intend to install a homebrew hex-beam at the QTH. In the field I run an EFHW antenna. I’m active as possible with my local clubs and their VHF repeaters.
Current Radio awards include Worked all States, Worked All States POTA Hunter, Worked All Continents. Making progress towards DXCC. Working on earning my Certified Electronics Technician certification, and slowly working on my Bachelor’s in Electronics Engineering Technology. Hope to hear you on the air and add you to the log. 73 de W4EWO
