Got into Amateur Radio in December 2021, and upgraded to General in January 2022. Got started in radio with my GMRS (UHF) license for offroading/backpacking/hiking, although I've been interested in HAM for years. I love the outdoors so POTA/SOTA is my favorite HAM activity so far. I have over 4 years of experience working on military radios (VHF) in the field as a Cavalry Scout in the U.S Army. I am now a Electromagnetic Warfare Sergeant where I am working with all aspects of the electromagnetic spectrum. I especially enjoy homebrewing antennas and have a home soldering station for building and repairing electronics. I'm most recently getting into Raspberry Pi, Linux, and Python programming. My first HAM projects have involved a 2m ground plane antenna, a 70cm tape measure Yagi Uda, and using a Harbor Freight 20ft telescoping flag pole as an antenna mast. I'm now running an APRS I-gate/Digipeater using a Raspberry Pi 1b and a Baofeng F8HP through a diamond 2 5/8 wave 2m ground plane on the peak of my roof at 25ft. I'm active as possible with my local clubs and their VHF repeaters. After upgrading to General, I am obsessed with HF and work SSB and FT8. My workhorse radio is a Yaesu FT-857D, digimodes ran through a digirig mobile. For POTA I use a homebrew 64ft EFHW antenna build out of 14g wire and a 49:1 Unun. I've used the FT-857D for the last year on many POTA activations. It will now be my shack rig in favor of the FT817ND for portable HF QRP Operations, this is paired with a KM4ACK EFHW. My mobile rig is now a Yaesu FTM-300D for 2m/70cm which got me to build the APRS Beacons. My next projects involve setting up a 30ft rohn tower I purchased from an old farm for $100. and running HF antennas at my new house. My plan is to setup a multi-band fan dipole as my primary HF antenna at my QTH. I also plan on adding a Panadapter to the FT-857D to run the radio from my PC and use more modern features such as waterfalls and narrow filtering. Working on earning my Certified Electronics Technician certification, and slowly working on my Bachelor's in Electronics Engineering. Upgraded to Amateur Extra in April 2023. My next step is setting up my new shack at my new QTH, pictures are from my previous QTH. Hope to hear you on the nets and add you to the log. 73 de W4EWO
